| Burnaby Home for Inaugural Pan American Junior Championships |
New to the calendar, the 2016 Pan American Junior Championships will be staged in Burnaby, a city located on the west coast of Canada in British Columbia being immediately to the east of Vancouver; a six day event, play commences on Saturday 25th June and concludes on Thursday 30th June.
Venue for the proceedings is the Fortius Sport and Health Centre.
In keeping with tradition for such major competitons, seven events will be staged: Boys’ Team, Girls’ Team, Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles, Boys’ Doubles, Girls’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
The Continent
Pan America combines the North American Table Tennis Union and the Latin American Table Tennis Union.
The North American Table Tennis Union comprises four national associations in the guise of Bermuda, Canada, the United States Virgin Islands and the United States; the Latin American Table Tennis is formed by a total of 40 national associations located in three distinct regions: the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
Teams Accepted
At the 2016 Pan American Junior Championships, in each of the Junior Boys’ Team and Junior Girls’ Team events a total of 16 teams will be accepted.
In each event North America is eligible to enter two teams, for Central America it is four teams as it is for the Caribbean; for South America it is six teams.
World Junior Championships
A tournament in its own right; the event is a qualification event for the forthcoming 2016 World Junior Championships to be staged in the South African city of Cape Town from Wednesday 30th November to Wednesday 7th December.
Four places are available in Cape Town for Pan America in each of the Boys’ Team and Girls’ Team events; the winners and runners up in each event will qualify.
In order to complete the two remaining places in each event, the quarter-finalists in top half of the draw face each other; the winner plays the losing semi-finalist from the lower half of the draw to determine one of the two remaining places. Conversely the quarter-finalists in lower half of the draw compete; the winner plays the losing semi-finalist from the top half of the draw to determine other remaining place.
Maximum Numbers
Each national association may enter a maximum of four boys and four girls; however, any player within North America who is named in the top 16 of the Under 18 World Rankings for May 2016 and is not a member of a national association competing in the relevant team event, may compete in the individual events.
Meanwhile in all three doubles events, a national association may enter a maximum of two pairs in each event; pairs must be from the same national association. In both the Boys’ Singles and Girls’ Singles events, pairs must be from the same national association.
Deadline Dates
The closing date for visa applications is Tuesday 10th May, the deadline for entries and travel details is Tuesday 24th May; changes in nominations will be accepted until Thursday 23rd June.
