The CCTTA is quickly becoming Canada's prime location for
international table tennis competitions in Canada. After successfully hosting
the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Junior Open, the never tiring CCTTA President
Harvey Fung marshaled his members to another successful venture, the 2012 CIBC
Hong Kong Cup. Table Tennis greats Zoran Primorac (CRO) and Petr Korbel (CZE)
led the field of entries with a team from Guangdong and from Hong Kong. Three
Canadian teams rounded out the field.
In the team competition, CANADA 1 finished 4th behind Team
Europe, Hong Kong and Guandong. Canada #1 Eugen Zhen Wang, in impressive
manner, disposed of the top entry Zoran Primorac by a score of 3-0.
Team Europe - in a match that went down to the wire - won
the team finals against Hong Kong by a score of 3-2.
The biggest upset came in the Singles event where Canada's
Pierre-Luc Theriault, who has had an outstanding year: ITTF North America Cup
winer and ITTF North America Champion, eliminated top seed Primorac in the
Quarter Finals in a closely fought 4-2 win (11-5, 12-10, 8-11, 3-11, 11-9,
11-9.)
Xavier Therien, now the veteran on the Canadian team, upset
the seeding in round 1 and ended the tournament for Hong Kong's Ka Chun
Tse with a 4-1 win.
The semis featured two exciting match ups,
China's Haohong Sun vs Pierre-Luc Therien and Peter Korbel vs Eugene Zhen
Wang. While keeping it close, Theriault never seemed to gain the upper hand and
had to acknowledge Chinese superiority.
Eugene Wang, on the other hand, had chances galore. At 2-2,
he held no fewer than 4 game points only to see an excellent playing Korbel
take the game, and eventually the match.
In the finals, Korbel dominated Haohong Sun and claimed top
spot with a solid 4-1 win.
