CRYSTAL WANG AND JASON ZHANG TAKE BUTTERFLY CANADA CUP #1

Burnaby, BC - It was the competition of the teenagers.

In the Women’s Singles Crystal Wang (USA) cruised through the Canada Cup draw dropping only two games, one to Laura Lai and another one to Benita Zhou both from British Columbia. Local youngster Ivy Liao claimed silver while Isabelle Xiong took bronze. Wang was in a league of her own; the 14 year old from Seattle impressed her opponents and the spectators with a flawless performance.

On the men’s side, 16 year-old Jason Zhang (Beijing, China) was in trouble more than once but was able to upset the field. In a spectacular final match against Alberta’s Brian Ho, Zhang eventually prevailed with a 4-2 win. 14-year old Edward Ly who had just returned from a lengthy training camp in China put in a solid performance to finish 4th, challenging Vancouver’s veteran Stephen Li to a 7-game thriller. Ly eventually had to acknowledge the greater experience of Vancouver’s top player.

Adrian Wei (ON) and Fiona Nie (BC) won the Hopes category.
