US Open Review
The US Open 2012 took place in beautiful Grand Rapids
Michigan, at the stunning Devos Place convention centre, from July 2nd
to 4th. Of the 611 entries,
over 10% were Canadians, including London 2012 athletes Eugene Zhen Wang,
Hongtao Chen, Andre Ho, and Pierre-Lu
Hinse.
Men’s Singles
Both Andre Ho and Pierre-Luc Hinse met with strong Chinese
talent in the Men’s Singles draw. Ho
played well against Jianxu Liu of China, but in the end came up short
(4,8,9,10). Hinse played a 7 game nail-biter
against Qing Liang Wang, who just sneaked by him in the Round of 16
(10,10,-8,5,-7,-10,8).
In the Round of 32, Hongtao Chen, put on a big effort, but
was only slightly bettered by Korean Sang Soo Kim (7,-6,10,-7,6,-15,7).
Eugene Zhen Wang had come of a win at the Florida Open two
weeks earlier. In a friendly match against a Korean team, he did not give up a
match and at the US Open he made a statement by not leaving much chance to his
opponents.
Only Filip Szymanski of Poland, who had been training with
the Canadian team prior to the US Open, pushed their semi-finals match to a 7th
game (9,5,8,-9,-8,-9,9). In the finals, Eugene met yet another
European player, Thomas Keinath. of Slovakia
After a 5 game finale (7,9,-7,1,13), Eugene put the final point away to
claim his first US Open title.
