Pierre-Luc Hinse - New Canadian Champion |
After winning the North American Championships at the same venue in Mississauga earlier this year, Pierre-Luc Hinse had to feel pretty confident for the Canadian Championships. However, some injury problems leading up to the Championships made a second title in the same year look less likely.
The match seemed to confirm the less likely part. Down 2-9 in the seventh in the Men's Singles Final, Pradeeban Peter-Paul was looking to make two coronation points to claim yet another Canadian title. But, Hinse had a different plan. On many occasions Peter-Paul was termed the 'escape artist', down match points only to come back to claim victory.
This time Hinse turned the table. From 2-9, Hinse rallied for 9 straight points for game, match, Candian Champion!
"It was funny," Hinse said after the match "Pradee is always cool when he is behind, here he seemed to be nervous when leading."
Two major titles - both for the first time - in the same year and in the same venue - the Mississauga Campus of My Table Tennis Club.
